India assures energy security with 3-4 weeks of inventory and 60% of crude sourced from alternative routes.

Amidst mounting global panic over the Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz, top officials in New Delhi have moved to dispel fears of an impending domestic energy crisis. Following the death of Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and escalating conflicts with the US and Israel, Tehran has threatened to obliterate any vessels attempting to navigate the critical maritime corridor. While India is the third-largest importer of crude globally, government insiders assure that the nation is insulated from immediate shock.

Robust Domestic Inventory

Strategic diversification is currently playing a crucial role in safeguarding India’s energy grid. Officials point out that a full 60% of the country’s crude supply relies on maritime trajectories completely independent of the Hormuz chokepoint. Furthermore, the Ministry of Petroleum maintains that domestic reserves of critical fuels—including diesel, petrol, LNG, and LPG—are fully stocked, providing a comfortable operational buffer of three to four weeks before any supply strain would theoretically materialize.

Pivoting to Russian Crude

Behind the scenes, the oil ministry and state marketing corporations are quietly exploring emergency contingencies to bypass the 40% deficit caused by the blockade. Reports suggest that New Delhi is seriously considering a massive influx of Russian crude to offset potential shortages. Interestingly, this strategic pivot is occurring despite a recent bilateral trade agreement signed last month, in which India had previously committed to the United States that it would phase out its reliance on Moscow’s oil exports.
