DRI dismantled a sophisticated gold smuggling network in Delhi and Kolkata, seizing ₹14.13 crore in assets and arresting six key syndicate members.
Overview of the Enforcement Action
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled a highly organized criminal network specializing in the illegal importation and processing of foreign gold. In a coordinated multi-city strike, federal agents intercepted a sophisticated pipeline that moved contraband from international borders to the domestic bullion markets of Delhi and Kolkata. The operation resulted in the recovery of precious metals and liquid capital valued at approximately ₹14.13 crore.
Tactics of the Smuggling Operation
The syndicate utilized a multi-stage process to evade law enforcement:
- Infiltration: Foreign-origin gold was smuggled into the country through clandestine channels.
- Logistics: The group favored the national rail network to transport the illicit goods between major hubs.
- Tampering: Illegal refineries were established to melt the gold, effectively removing foreign serial numbers and hallmarks to mask its origin before it entered the local market.
Breakdown of Recovered Assets
During the raids, officials seized a significant haul of contraband and proceeds of crime under the Customs Act, 1962. The inventory of the seizure includes:
- Gold: 8,286.81 grams (estimated at ₹13.41 crore).
- Silver: 7,350.4 grams (valued at ₹19.67 lakh).
- Cash: ₹51,74,100 in Indian currency.
Strategic Raids in Delhi and Kolkata
The crackdown began at the New Delhi Railway Station, where officers intercepted a courier arriving from Kolkata. This initial arrest led investigators to a secret melting facility in the capital, where the facility manager was taken into custody.
Simultaneously, the investigation moved to Kolkata, targeting the “nerve center” of the operation. DRI teams uncovered a second illegal refinery and apprehended the syndicate’s mastermind along with two additional couriers. These individuals admitted to receiving foreign-marked gold and processing it to strip away identifying markings before dispatching it back to Delhi.
Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook
A total of six suspects have been arrested and presented before the court for their roles in the smuggling, refining, and distribution phases of the racket. While the immediate threat has been neutralized, the DRI has indicated that the investigation remains active to identify further links in the supply chain and potential international connections.
