Srinagar to get Rainbow Trout cooperative, export-grade labs, and climate-resilient farming.

National experts and industry leaders convene in Srinagar to modernize high-altitude aquaculture and establish global export standards.

A Landmark Dialogue for Himalayan Aquaculture

The Department of Fisheries recently concluded its inaugural National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries at the SKICC in Srinagar. This first-of-its-kind gathering served as a strategic platform to discuss the sustainable development of high-altitude aquatic resources. By bringing together government officials, scientists, and progressive farmers, the conference aimed to transform traditional cold-water fishing into a high-growth, technology-driven sector capable of driving prosperity across India’s Himalayan regions.

Highlighting Innovation: The Side-Line Exhibition

Complementing the technical discussions, an extensive exhibition featured 17 diverse participants, ranging from the National Fisheries Development Board to private innovators like K2 Aquaculture and Smart Green Aquaculture. The display showcased:

  • Advanced Feed Solutions: Specialized trout feed innovations from companies like Growel and ABIS.
  • Technological Infrastructure: Next-generation raceway designs and water management systems.
  • Institutional Support: Programs from NABARD and ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research focused on grassroots empowerment.

Overcoming Field-Level Challenges

Technical deliberations, chaired by Union Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, provided a reality check on the “on-ground” obstacles facing mountain-based fish farmers. Stakeholders identified several critical bottlenecks:

  • Biological Risks: An urgent requirement for specialized disease testing laboratories to monitor stock health.
  • Environmental Stressors: Issues such as water contamination and oxygen depletion in raceways during heavy monsoon rains.
  • Input Scarcity: The need for a consistent supply of climate-resilient seeds and high-quality broodstock.

Strategic Roadmap for Export Readiness

To move from local production to international trade, the conference proposed a robust structural overhaul of the sector. The proposed roadmap includes:

  1. Institutional Convergence: The establishment of a multi-state cooperative society dedicated specifically to Rainbow Trout to unify production standards.
  2. Post-Harvest Infrastructure: Development of FSSAI-approved processing centers equipped with Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) and blast-freezing technology to meet global phyto-sanitary requirements.
  3. Financial and Human Capital: Leveraging the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) to foster vertical integration and training a skilled workforce capable of managing mountain ecosystems.

Conclusion: A Vision for Vertical Integration

The Srinagar summit underscored that the future of cold-water fisheries lies in the adoption of commercial-scale business models. By bridging the gap between research and entrepreneurship, the Department of Fisheries aims to create a robust cold-chain network that minimizes losses and ensures that India’s unique high-altitude fish varieties find their way into premium global markets.
