₹14-Crore Khelo India Sports Complex to Mandya : “Vibrant Mandya” initiative

Union Ministers lay the foundation for a ₹14-crore indoor sports complex in Mandya, alongside distributing 388 EVs and IT equipment under CSR initiatives.

Strengthening the Grassroots Sports Ecosystem

In a significant boost to regional athletics, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, performed the Bhoomi Pooja for a new multi-purpose indoor sports complex in Mandya, Karnataka. Sanctioned under the Central Government’s flagship Khelo India scheme, the ₹14-crore facility is being constructed within the University of Agricultural Sciences (VC Farm) campus. The ministers urged the local youth to embrace the slogan “Khelo India! Vibrant Mandya!” to foster a culture of excellence and produce future national champions.

Mandya’s Sporting Legacy and National Growth

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Mandaviya lauded Mandya’s history of producing world-class talent, specifically citing discus thrower Vikas Gowda and India’s top-ranked wheelchair tennis player, K.P. Shilpa. He emphasized that the national sports budget has seen a threefold increase over the last decade—rising from ₹1,200 crore to ₹4,000 crore—to ensure that world-class facilities are accessible beyond metropolitan centers. The Minister credited H.D. Kumaraswamy’s persistent advocacy for the realization of this well-equipped complex in the district.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Welfare

The event transcended sports infrastructure, serving as a platform for substantial community support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) collaborations:

  • Mobility for PwDs: 388 electric vehicles were distributed to persons with disabilities, funded by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
  • Digital Education: Infosys donated 500 desktop computers and 100 laptops to local government schools to bridge the digital divide.
  • Healthcare Support: A state-of-the-art ambulance was presented to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) by the Hinduja Group.

A Cultural and Emotional Milestone

The ceremony was marked by deep local significance and emotional moments. The ministers were welcomed with a massive garland made of Mandya’s famous jaggery, symbolizing the region’s agricultural heritage. Minister Kumaraswamy became visibly emotional during the distribution of electric vehicles, moved by the beneficiaries’ gratitude. The event also received the spiritual blessings of Jagadguru Sri Dr. Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji, Pontiff of the Adichunchanagiri Mahasamsthana, reflecting the deep-rooted community support for the project.

Future Outlook: From Local Talent to Global Stage

The establishment of this indoor complex is viewed as a critical step in identifying and nurturing rural talent early. By providing all-weather training facilities and modern equipment, the government aims to ensure that athletes from Mandya have the resources necessary to compete at international levels. This project aligns with the broader vision of transforming India into a leading global sporting nation through decentralized infrastructure and comprehensive athlete support systems.
